A 2024 UPSC prelims question tested both facts together: the Red Sea gets very little rain, and no permanent river feeds it. Both are true.

An Unusual Hydrology.
Rain, Rivers, and Where the Water Comes From.
- Very Little Rain. Most of the Red Sea coastline, on both the African and Arabian sides, receives less than 250 mm of rainfall a year, classifying it as desert.
- No Permanent Rivers. No permanent river flows into the Red Sea. Only wadis, seasonal dry riverbeds, occasionally carry flash-flood water into it during rare rain events.
- High Evaporation. Evaporation from the Red Sea exceeds 80 inches (over 2 metres) a year, far more than rainfall or river inflow could ever replace.
- Water Balance. The evaporation loss is made up by an inflow of water through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
- The 2024 PYQ. Both statements, on low rainfall and the absence of rivers, were tested as correct together.

Consequences of No Freshwater Inflow.
- Extreme Salinity. With virtually no freshwater inflow from rain or rivers, and constant high evaporation, the Red Sea has some of the highest salinity of any sea connected to the open ocean.
- Warm Waters. The Red Sea is also among the warmest and saltiest bodies of seawater in the world, supporting distinctive marine ecosystems adapted to these conditions.
- Coral Reefs. Despite, or partly because of, these harsh conditions, the Red Sea hosts extensive and biodiverse coral reef systems, popular for diving and marine research.
- A Narrow Sea. The Red Sea formed as part of the Great Rift Valley system, separating the African and Arabian tectonic plates, and continues to widen slowly today.

Why the Red Sea Matters Beyond Geography.
- The Suez Route. The Red Sea connects to the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal at its northern end, making it one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors.
- The Sumed Alternative. The Sumed pipeline offers an overland alternative to the Suez Canal, carrying crude oil between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.
- The Southern Gateway. At its southern end, the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, a chokepoint that has seen major shipping disruptions in recent years.
- Exam Angle. UPSC frequently pairs physical geography facts, like rainfall and rivers, with statement-based questions, since precise hydrology is easy to test but often poorly remembered.
