🏜️ A Desert Lake, Not a Sahara Lake
1. Where Lake Turkana Actually Sits
- Country Lake Turkana lies mainly in northern Kenya. Its far northern tip crosses into Ethiopia.
- Not the Sahara The lake sits in the Great Rift Valley, in East Africa. The Sahara Desert is a different region entirely, far to the north.
- A Common Trap UPSC questions often place Lake Turkana in South Sudan or near the Sahara. Neither is correct.
- Size The lake stretches about 250km from north to south, and up to 44km at its widest point.
2. The World’s Largest Desert Lake
- Superlative Lake Turkana is the world’s largest permanent desert lake, sitting in an arid, sparsely vegetated landscape.
- Closed Basin It is endorheic, meaning it has no outlet to the sea. Water only leaves through evaporation.
- Salinity That makes it saline, though still drinkable. Its salinity is about 2.5 grams per litre.
- Jade Sea Algae blooms give the water a striking green colour. This earned it the nickname the Jade Sea.
🦴 The Cradle of Mankind
1. The Koobi Fora Fossil Beds
- Location Koobi Fora sits on the lake’s eastern shore. Researchers, led for decades by the Leakey family, have excavated fossils there since 1968.
- Scale The site has yielded fossils from roughly 230 individuals, spanning three species of Homo and four australopith species.
- Why the Lake Helps Lake sediments preserve bones unusually well, and nearby volcanic ash layers let scientists date the fossils precisely.
2. Turkana Boy
- Discovery In 1984, Kamoya Kimeu found a nearly complete skeleton at Nariokotome, on the lake’s western shore.
- Who He Was The skeleton, known as Turkana Boy or KNM-WT 15000, belonged to a Homo erectus youth who lived about 1.5-1.6 million years ago.
- Significance It remains the most complete Homo erectus skeleton ever found, and a cornerstone of human-evolution research.

⚠️ A Heritage Site in Danger
1. UNESCO Recognition
- Inscription UNESCO inscribed the Lake Turkana National Parks as a World Heritage Site in 1997, covering Sibiloi National Park and Central Island.
- Extension The listing was extended in 2001 to include South Island National Park.
- Volcanic Islands Central Island and South Island are both volcanic, sitting within the lake itself, and serve as important breeding grounds for crocodiles.
2. Threatened by an Upstream Dam
- The Omo River Ethiopia’s Omo River supplies about 90% of the lake’s inflow.
- Gibe III Dam Ethiopia’s Gibe III dam on the Omo River began filling its reservoir in January 2015, reducing downstream flow into the lake.
- In Danger UNESCO added Lake Turkana National Parks to its List of World Heritage in Danger in June 2018. As of 2025, it remained on that list.
- Why It Matters A falling lake level would raise salinity further and threaten hippos, crocodiles, fish stocks, and the communities that depend on them.
