UPSC Mains 2019 GS1 Q11: Many Voices That Strengthened the Gandhian-Phase Movement

The Gandhian phase (roughly 1919-1947) was not a one-man movement. Multiple distinct voices and strands strengthened it alongside Gandhi’s own leadership.

Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, and other revolutionaries pursued a militant, armed strand of nationalism, pressuring the British through direct action.

The Ali Brothers, Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali, brought India’s Muslim community into mass mobilisation through the Khilafat Movement, allied with Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation.

Chittaranjan Das founded the Swaraj Party in 1922, pursuing a parallel constitutional strategy: contesting and obstructing councils from within, rather than boycotting them entirely.

Younger Congress leaders founded the Congress Socialist Party in 1934, pushing economic and class questions the older Gandhian leadership had been slower to prioritise.

Ambedkar’s separate advocacy for Dalit political rights added a critical internal voice, challenging Congress and Gandhi directly on questions of representation.

This variety of voices meant the movement could draw support across religion, class, caste, and gender lines, rather than depending on one narrow base.
