Article 46 of the Constitution

CONSTITUTION OF INDIAArticle 46

46. Promotion of educational and economic interests of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other weaker sections.—The State shall promote with special care the educational and economic interests of the weaker sections of the people, and, in particular, of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes, and shall protect them from social injustice and all forms of exploitation.

Exam note: Article 46 is a Directive Principle — not enforceable in court — but it is the constitutional foundation that later, enforceable provisions like Article 15(4) and 16(4) were built to carry out.

Article 46 is a promise, not an order: it directs the State to promote SC, ST, and weaker-section interests, and protect them from exploitation — even though a court cannot force the State to act on it.
