Anshu Jamsenpa: The Only Woman to Summit Everest Twice in Five Days

In 2017, Anshu Jamsenpa climbed Mount Everest twice in five days. It wasn’t even her first time summiting it twice in one season.

Anshu Jamsenpa was born on 31 December 1979, in Dirang, West Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh. Her father served in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police; her mother was a nurse.
In 2011, she summited Everest twice in one season, on 12 May and 21 May, nine days apart. This was her first double summit.
In 2013, she summited Everest a third time, as part of the North East India Everest Expedition.
In 2017, she summited Everest twice again, on 16 May and 21 May, this time just five days apart.
That 2017 climb made her the first woman in the world to summit Everest twice within five days.
In total, she has summited Everest five times, more than any other Indian woman.

She is married to Tsering Wange, and has two daughters.
She received the CNN-IBN Young Indian Leader Award in 2011, and was named FICCI Woman Achiever of the Year for 2011-12.
In 2017, Arunachal Pradesh named her its Tourism Icon of the Year.
She received the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, presented in 2018, for her record-setting 2017 climb.
In 2021, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour.

Her 2011 and 2017 double summits are different achievements, not the same record repeated. The 2011 pair was nine days apart; only the 2017 pair, five days apart, set the specific world record.
Her Padma Shri came in 2021, four years after the 2017 climb that made her famous. Formal recognition doesn’t always follow immediately after an achievement.
Across her five total summits, she never stopped at just one record. Each climb built on facts already established by the last, rather than standing alone.
