Where Did Jogen Chowdhury Come From?

Where and when was he born?
Jogen Chowdhury was born in February 1939 in Faridpur. That town is now in Bangladesh. His family left after Partition and settled in Kolkata.
The move shaped his world. Kolkata gave him teachers, a city full of street life and a lasting set of faces to draw.
Where did he train?
He studied at the Government College of Art and Craft in Kolkata from 1955 to 1960. In the mid-1960s he went to Paris on a French government scholarship. He studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts.
Paris showed him modern European drawing. He did not copy it. He brought its freedom back to a Bengal subject.

What Did He Do for a Living?
What was his job at the Rashtrapati Bhavan?
From 1972 he was curator of the art collection at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He held the post for about fifteen years. He looked after paintings that tell the story of Indian art.
This gave him daily contact with older Indian art. It also gave him a steady income while he kept drawing.
Why is Santiniketan important in his story?
After the Rashtrapati Bhavan, he taught at Kala Bhavana, the art school of Visva-Bharati at Santiniketan. This is the school linked to Rabindranath Tagore. Later he became a professor emeritus.
Teaching tied him to the Bengal tradition. He still stood apart from it in style.
What is Charubasona?
Charubasona is his own art museum and cultural space. It shows his work and that of other artists. It reflects a wish to share art with ordinary visitors.
What Made His Art Different?
What did his drawings look like?
His figures are bent and stretched. Their eyes and limbs are exaggerated. He used ink and pastel and covered the surface with fine cross-hatching.
His subjects were often ordinary people and the powerful, drawn with a dry sense of humour. The result is playful and slightly unsettling.
Which older traditions did he draw on?
He drew on Bengal folk art. Kalighat pat is one clear source. It began in 19th-century Kolkata and is known for flowing outlines and bold forms.
So he mixed folk line, Paris training and his own eye. That mix is his signature.
Think it through: A painting shows a soft wash of colour, a mythic scene and a dreamy mood. Is it nearer to Jogen Chowdhury or to the Bengal School? Hint: look at the line and the medium.
