Machines that pull carbon dioxide straight out of thin air sound like science fiction. They already exist, and the CO2 they capture can end up buried underground, turned into plastic, or burned as jet fuel.

What DAC Is
- Straight From AirDirect Air Capture (DAC) extracts carbon dioxide directly from the ambient atmosphere. Conventional carbon capture instead pulls CO2 from a concentrated industrial source, like a power-plant flue.
- Carbon SequestrationCaptured CO2 can be permanently stored underground, often injected into saline aquifers or basalt formations, as a form of carbon sequestration.
- Industrial FeedstockCaptured CO2 is also a valuable feedstock. It can be converted into some types of plastics and polymers, and purified to food- and beverage-grade CO2 for food processing.
- Synthetic Aviation FuelIn aviation, captured CO2 can be combined with hydrogen to produce synthetic low-carbon fuel, a pathway explored as a way to cut flight emissions.

- Ultra-Dilute ChallengeDAC must extract CO2 from air where it makes up only about 0.04%, roughly 400 parts per million. That’s far more dilute than the CO2 stream at a factory chimney, making DAC energy-intensive and comparatively costly.
- Climeworks PioneerClimeworks, a Swiss company founded in 2009, is one of the best-known commercial DAC operators, running large-scale plants including one in Iceland.
- DACCS vs DACCUDAC paired with storage is called DACCS (Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage). DAC paired with converting the CO2 into fuel or products is called DACCU (Direct Air Carbon Capture and Utilization).
- Still EmergingDAC remains an emerging, small-scale technology globally. Significant research and investment is still needed to make it cost-effective at climate-relevant scale.
