An Indian astronomer explained Earth’s own rotation more than a thousand years before Copernicus. He worked at the same court that hosted ancient India’s greatest Sanskrit poet.

Aryabhata and the New Mathematics Need to Know
- Aryabhata completed the Aryabhatiya in 499 CE, when he was only 23 years old.
- The text is written in Sanskrit verse. It covers mathematics, astronomy, and time-reckoning in a single compact work.
- Aryabhata used a place-value number system. Zero worked as a placeholder for powers of ten, even without a dedicated symbol.
- He gave the value of pi as 62,832 divided by 20,000, or 3.1416. This is remarkably close to the true value.
- Aryabhata explained that Earth rotates on its own axis. He argued this rotation, not the movement of the stars, produces their daily rise and fall.
- He also stated that the Moon and planets shine by reflected sunlight, not by their own light.
- Aryabhata was the first known mathematician to solve certain Diophantine equations, alongside work on quadratic equations and trigonometry.
The Place-Value System’s Epigraphic Trail
- The earliest epigraphic evidence of India’s place-value system comes from the Mankani plates (also called the Sankheda plates), a land-grant inscription found near Vadodara, Gujarat, dated AD 595–596.
- The plates’ date is written in fully positional decimal notation, complete with placeholder zeros — the same principle Aryabhata used in the Aryabhatiya just a century earlier.
- By the ninth century, place-value notation had become the general standard in inscriptions across India, and the system had already reached South-east Asia, appearing in Sanskrit inscriptions there as early as the seventh century.

Kalidasa and the Gupta Court Need to Know
- Kalidasa is widely regarded as ancient India’s greatest Sanskrit poet and playwright.
- His most famous play, Abhijnanasakuntalam, tells the story of King Dushyanta and Shakuntala, separated and reunited through a ring.
- His short poem Meghaduta imagines an exiled spirit sending a message to his wife through a passing cloud.
- His epic poem Raghuvamsha traces the kings of the Raghu dynasty across many generations.
- Kalidasa’s work gave different characters distinct registers of Sanskrit and Prakrit, matched to their social standing.
- He is traditionally counted among the Navaratnas, the “Nine Gems” of Chandragupta II’s court, alongside Varahamihira.
- His plays and poems are still read and performed today, more than 1,500 years after they were written.

Temple Architecture and Other Sciences Good to Know
- The Dashavatara Temple at Deogarh, built around 500 CE, is one of India’s earliest surviving stone temples.
- It follows a panchayatana layout: a central shrine surrounded by four smaller subsidiary shrines.
- The temple shows an early shift toward the shikhara, the rising tower that later defined North Indian temple architecture.
- Varahamihira, another of the Navaratnas, wrote the Panchasiddhantika and the Brihat Samhita in the 6th century CE.
- The Panchasiddhantika synthesised earlier Indian astronomy with Greek, Roman, and Egyptian ideas reaching India through trade.
- The Brihat Samhita is a wide-ranging text. It covers architecture, agriculture, gemstones, and astrology in a single encyclopaedic work.
- Aryabhata’s place-value system also fed directly into a wider decimal number system, refined further by later Indian mathematicians.
- Charaka and other physicians of this broader era advanced ancient Indian medicine alongside these mathematical and architectural gains.
