The Teesta is often confused with the much larger Brahmaputra it eventually feeds. The two rivers actually rise from entirely different sources.

- The Teesta originates from Tso Lhamo Lake, at about 5,280 metres in North Sikkim.
- This source is entirely separate from the Brahmaputra’s, which rises near Manasarovar in Tibet.
- The Rangeet, which also originates in Sikkim, is a genuine tributary of the Teesta.
- The Teesta flows south through West Bengal, then into Bangladesh.
- It joins the Brahmaputra (called the Jamuna in Bangladesh) rather than flowing into the Bay of Bengal on its own.
