What a National Waterway is
- A National Waterway is a river, canal, or backwater stretch declared navigable by the Union government for cargo and passenger transport. India currently has 111 declared National Waterways.
The nodal agency
- The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), set up in 1986, develops and regulates this network. It handles dredging, terminal building, and navigation aids.
NW-1: the longest waterway
- National Waterway 1 runs along the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system, from Prayagraj to Haldia. At about 1,620 km, it is India’s longest declared waterway.
Other major waterways
- NW-2 uses the Brahmaputra in Assam. NW-3 links Kollam and Kottapuram in Kerala via the West Coast Canal. NW-4 runs on the Krishna and Godavari systems in Andhra Pradesh.

Why cargo owners prefer water for bulk goods
- Moving cargo by river costs less per tonne-kilometre than road, and often less than rail too, for bulk goods. This makes waterways attractive for coal, cement, foodgrains, and containers.

- Inland water transport burns less fuel per tonne of cargo moved than road transport. Shifting freight to waterways cuts both logistics cost and carbon emissions.
Relieving road and rail congestion
- Every tonne moved by river is a tonne that doesn’t add to road or rail congestion. This matters most on corridors already running near capacity.

- The Jal Marg Vikas Project, with World Bank assistance, upgrades NW-1’s navigability between Haldia and Varanasi. It funds multi-modal terminals, including at Varanasi and Sahibganj.
