Land Use Classification and Land Degradation in India

Land looks like the one resource nobody can add more of. India’s own land-use records still split that fixed amount into nine very different categories. Where a plot sits inside that scheme decides whether it can ever be farmed at all.

This article covers how India classifies its land use, and the land degradation problems eating into the country’s most productive category.

India’s Nine-Fold Land Use Classification
  • Forest AreaThis is land legally recorded as forest, regardless of whether actual tree cover exists on it. The legal record and the real forest cover on the ground can differ, which is a common point of confusion.
  • Area Not Available for CultivationThis covers land that simply cannot be farmed. It includes barren and uncultivable land like rocky, arid or desert terrain, plus land used for non-agricultural purposes like buildings, roads and railways.
  • Other Uncultivated Land (Excluding Fallow)This includes permanent pastures and grazing land, and land under miscellaneous tree crops and groves. It also includes culturable wasteland, land that could technically be cultivated but sits unused.
  • Fallow LandsThis is farmland deliberately left unsown for a period, to let it recover. It splits into current fallow (rested this year) and other fallow (rested longer).
  • Net Sown AreaThis is the actual area sown with crops at least once in a year. It is the category that most directly represents India’s real, active farmland.

  • Why Land Is Left FallowFarmers rest a field on purpose to let its soil fertility recover naturally. This matters most where fertiliser use is limited, or the soil has been heavily cropped.
  • Culturable Wasteland vs FallowLand officially becomes “culturable wasteland,” not just fallow, once it has been left uncultivated for more than five years in a row. Below that five-year mark, it still counts as fallow land.
  • Gross Cropped AreaWhen a single plot grows two or three crops in one year, each sowing counts separately toward gross cropped area. The net sown area, though, only counts that plot once.
  • Cropping IntensityDividing gross cropped area by net sown area gives cropping intensity. A higher number means farmers are extracting more harvests per year from the same fixed plot of land.

Three Ways Land Degrades
  • Soil ErosionWind and flowing water strip away a field’s fertile top layer of soil, especially where land has been cleared of its natural vegetation cover. Once this top layer is gone, it takes far longer to rebuild than it took to remove.
  • WaterloggingExcessive or poorly-drained irrigation raises the water table until it sits too close to the surface. This drowns plant roots, and eventually makes the land unfit for most crops.
  • Soil Salinity and AlkalinityIn areas with heavy irrigation but poor drainage, water evaporates from the topsoil and leaves salts behind. Over time, this buildup can make land completely unusable for farming.

Fighting Back: Conservation Measures
  • AfforestationPlanting trees on degraded or bare land helps roots bind the soil in place, directly reducing how much topsoil erosion can strip away.
  • Contour Ploughing and TerracingPloughing along a slope’s natural contour lines, or cutting a steep slope into flat terraces, both slow down rainwater runoff. This gives water more time to soak in, rather than carrying soil away.
  • Controlled Grazing and Shelter BeltsRotating where livestock graze stops any one patch of grassland from being stripped bare. Planting rows of trees as shelter belts blocks wind before it can pick up and carry away loose soil.

Exam Wisdom: The Fallow-Land Definitions
  • Watch ForExams often test the exact five-year threshold that separates ordinary fallow land from culturable wasteland. Below five years, it is fallow; beyond that, it is reclassified as culturable wasteland.
  • Watch ForDon’t confuse “forest area” (the legally recorded category) with actual tree cover on the ground. India’s recorded forest area and its real forest cover are measured differently and can differ meaningfully.
  • Watch ForCropping intensity and yield sound similar but measure different things. Yield is output per unit of land; cropping intensity is how many times a year that same land gets cropped.
