The Birth Story Need to Know

• Krishna Janmashtami marks the birth of Krishna, one of Hinduism’s most widely worshipped deities.
• The account is told in the Bhagavata Purana. Krishna is born in a prison cell in Mathura.
• His parents were Devaki and Vasudeva. His uncle was the tyrant king Kansa.
• A prophecy had warned Kansa that Devaki’s eighth child would be his destroyer. He imprisoned the couple and killed their first six children.
• Krishna is that eighth child. He is born at midnight, during a storm.
• The prison guards fall asleep and the gates open on their own. Vasudeva carries the infant across the flooded Yamuna River to safety at Gokul.
• Hindu tradition sets this in the Dwapara Yuga. Popular reckoning gives roughly 3112 BCE, though this is a scriptural date, not an archaeological one.

When and How It’s Marked Need to Know

• The festival falls on Ashtami, the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada.
• On the Gregorian calendar this usually lands in August or September.
• The date can differ by a day between traditions. Smarta households often mark it one day before ISKCON and other Vaishnava groups.
• Many devotees observe a fast through the day, breaking it only after the midnight birth is marked.
• Temples hold an abhishekam, a ritual bathing of the Krishna idol, timed to midnight.
• Homes and temples set up a small cradle for an infant Krishna image, called a jhula.
• Devotional singing and dance, known as kirtan and bhajan, run through the night in many communities.

Dahi Handi and the Law Good to Know

• Dahi Handi re-enacts a story from Krishna’s childhood, when he stole butter and curd as a boy, earning the name Makhan Chor.
• Teams called Govindas form a human pyramid to reach and break a clay pot of curd hung high above a street.
• The tradition is biggest in Mumbai, Thane and Pune, where it has become a large public spectacle with prize money.
• The pyramids, and the falls from them, are dangerous. Courts have been asked to intervene more than once.
• On 11 August 2014 the Bombay High Court capped pyramid height at 20 feet and barred anyone under 18 from taking part.
• The Supreme Court upheld that order in 2016.
• In 2017 the Bombay High Court revisited the question. It dropped the height limit, but kept a minimum age, lowered to 14.
• Separately, the Maharashtra government reclassified Dahi Handi as an adventure sport, with its own regulatory body.

Regional Forms of the Festival Good to Know

• Dahi Handi is a Maharashtrian form of the festival. Other regions mark it differently.
• In Mathura and Vrindavan, the birthplace region, the festival centres on Raslila performances re-enacting Krishna’s life.
• These towns draw large numbers of pilgrims specifically for Janmashtami, more than for most of the rest of the year.
• In Manipur, Krishna devotion is expressed through the classical Ras Lila dance tradition, distinct from the Braj-region performances.
• In South India the day is often called Sri Jayanti, marked with rangoli of tiny footprints leading into the house, tracing the infant Krishna’s steps.
• Gujarat’s Dwarka, associated with Krishna’s later life as a ruler, holds its own major temple celebrations.

Does the Rule Actually Work? Great to Know

• Be careful not to treat the 2017 ruling as a solved problem. The injury data since then says otherwise.
• In 2025, Dahi Handi events in Mumbai and Thane left two people dead and more than 300 injured.
• Among the injured was a nine-year-old boy, left in critical condition.
• That is a direct sign the 2017 age floor of 14 is not being enforced on the ground, whatever the rule says on paper.
• Enforcement, not the wording of the rule, is the real gap here.
• The “adventure sport” label gave the activity formal recognition and a governing body. It did not, by itself, reduce the toll.
• This is a useful case for distinguishing a legal change from an effective one. The two are not the same thing.

Krishna Beyond India Great to Know

• Krishna worship spread well beyond India through the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, known as ISKCON.
• ISKCON was founded in New York in 1966 by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.
• It now runs temples and Janmashtami celebrations across dozens of countries, drawing non-Indian devotees as well as the diaspora.
• ISKCON follows the Vaishnava dating convention for the festival, which is why its celebrations can fall a day after Smarta households mark it.
• This global spread is itself notable. Few Hindu festivals have an equivalent dedicated international organisational structure built around them.
