1. The Battle Behind the Nine Nights
- Why “Navratri” simply means “nine nights,” from the Sanskrit nava (nine) and ratri (night).
- Story The festival marks Goddess Durga’s battle against the demon Mahishasura. The fight lasted nine nights, and Durga won on the tenth day, known as Vijayadashami, or Dussehra.
- Link In North India, this same tenth day also marks Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana, celebrated with the burning of Ravana’s effigy.
2. Nine Nights, Nine Forms
- Navadurga Forms Each of the nine nights is dedicated to a different form of the goddess, together known as the Navadurga.
- Purana Origin According to the Devi Bhagavata Purana, these nine forms trace Parvati’s own spiritual journey.
- Mechanism The sequence runs from Shailputri, her form at birth, through Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, and Kalaratri, to Mahagauri.
- Result The final night belongs to Siddhidatri, representing her complete spiritual power.

4. One Festival, Many Forms
- In practice In Gujarat, Navratri means Garba, a circular dance around a decorated pot called a garbo, whose lamp represents eternal energy within a womb. Dandiya Raas, danced with small decorated sticks, is often performed alongside it.
- Instead In North India, the festival builds toward Ramlila, a dramatic retelling of the Ramayana, ending in the burning of effigies of Ravana.
- Instead In South India, families build tiered doll displays called Golu or Kolu, known by different names in different states, and serve visitors a snack called sundal.
- Instead In West Bengal, Odisha, and Assam, Sharad Navratri centres on Durga Puja, a large-scale, multi-day public celebration of its own.
- First Garba of Gujarat was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2023, India’s most recent addition to that list, ahead of Durga Puja (2021) and Kumbh Mela (2017).

6. Vibrant Navratri 2025, Ahmedabad
- Data From 22 September to 1 October 2025, Gujarat Tourism held the Vibrant Navratri Festival at Gujarat University Ground, Ahmedabad, themed “Aahvaan Ma AadyaShakti.”
