Once a year, engineers and priests work toward the same goal. At exactly noon, a beam of sunlight is guided through mirrors and lenses to land on a deity’s forehead. That is Ram Navami at Ayodhya today, and it did not always look like this.

An old festival, meeting a very new piece of engineering
Traditional

Medieval era
The Bhakti movement spreads Rama devotion
Rama worship grows through medieval India, carried further by works like Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas.
22 Jan 2024
The Ram Mandir is consecrated
The new Ram Janmabhoomi temple at Ayodhya is consecrated, becoming the site of a new Ram Navami tradition the very same year.
17 Apr 2024
The first Surya Tilak lights up Ram Lalla
A mirror-and-lens system, engineered by CSIR-CBRI, channels sunlight onto the idol’s forehead for the first time at noon.
Ancient story, new mechanism
Ram Navami’s core story hasn’t changed in centuries. But at Ayodhya, a scientific institute now builds the ritual’s most striking modern moment.
What Ram Navami Is Need to Know
- Ram Navami marks the birth of Lord Rama, worshipped as the seventh avatar of Vishnu.
- It falls on Navami, the ninth day of the Hindu month of Chaitra, and the final day of Chaitra Navratri.
- That places it in March or April on the Gregorian calendar. In 2026, Ram Navami fell on 26 March.
- Rama is often called Maryada Purushottam, “the perfect man,” for upholding duty over personal desire in every part of his story.
- His victory over the demon king Ravana is read as dharma, righteousness, triumphing over adharma, wrongdoing.
Rituals and Regional Celebrations Good to Know
- Temples are decorated with flowers, lights, and mango leaves for the occasion.
- Devotees prepare and share panakam, a jaggery-and-pepper drink, and kosambari, a moong-bean salad, as prasad.
- At temples like Bhadrachalam, Srirangam, and Rameswaram, priests hold Kalyanotsavam, a symbolic wedding ceremony for Rama and Sita.
- Bhadrachalam’s celebration also includes Edurukolu, a separate ceremony re-enacting the bridegroom Rama’s arrival at Sita’s side.
- In cities like Mumbai and Ahmedabad, the day is marked with Ram Rathayatras, processions carrying Rama’s image through the streets, along with kirtans and satsangs.
The Ramayana’s Role Good to Know
- Rama’s story comes from the Ramayana, composed by the sage Valmiki.
- Scholars offer a wide traditional dating range for the text, roughly between 500 and 100 BCE, without full agreement on an exact period.
- Ram Navami’s own observance grew over centuries, gaining much wider popularity during the medieval Bhakti movement.
- Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas, a later devotional retelling in Awadhi, helped carry Rama worship even further into popular practice. See MedHist0053 — Ramcharitmanas for that text’s own history.

Modern Science Meets Ancient Tradition Great to Know
- The new Ram Janmabhoomi temple at Ayodhya was consecrated on 22 January 2024.
- That same year, on Ram Navami, it introduced a new ritual moment built entirely through engineering: the Surya Tilak.
- CSIR-Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee, designed the mechanism, with technical input from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics.
- A system of mirrors and lenses tracks the sun’s path and channels sunlight from the temple’s third floor down to the sanctum.
- At noon on Ram Navami, that beam falls directly on the idol’s forehead for several minutes, a mechanical echo of an ancient tilak mark.
- It first illuminated Ram Lalla’s forehead on 17 April 2024, and is now designed to repeat automatically every Ram Navami.
