Your grandmother’s plate and your plate are not the same. What changed, and what does it do to our health?
A small story. Picture a family in a growing town. Twenty years ago, rotis and dal filled most of the plate. Today the table also has packaged snacks, sweet drinks and takeaway. Nobody planned this. Income rose, shops changed, and habits moved with them.
Now picture the same town’s clinic. Some children are still too thin or short of blood. Some adults are carrying too much weight. Both problems sit in one place. This lesson follows that story through the latest government surveys. For food supply, see Public Distribution System and Food Security.
- Spending: the food share of household spending fell between 2011-12 and 2023-24.
- Cereals: their spending share nearly halved in villages.
- Weight: NFHS-6 shows 30.7% of women and 27.3% of men aged 15-49 overweight or obese.
- Anaemia: latest numbers are from NFHS-5; NFHS-6 fact sheets leave it out.
- Policy: front-of-pack labels, school sugar boards, My Plate, millets.
What Is the Nutrition Transition?

What does the term mean?
The nutrition transition is a shift in what people eat. Diets move away from cereals and pulses. They move towards fats, sugars, animal foods and processed foods. (Source: The Print) (Source: WHO-ICRIER, Aug 2023)
It usually comes with rising income and city life. People can afford more variety. They also meet more packaged food.
It brings a double burden. That means undernutrition and overweight exist together in one country.
Does it mean everyone is eating too much?
No. That is a common mistake. The shift changes what people eat. It does not mean every person eats more.
You will see later that average calories actually dipped slightly. Yet overweight is rising. Quality matters, not only quantity.
How Has Indian Spending on Food Changed?
What does HCES say about the food share?
The Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) asks families what they spend. The food share of monthly spending per person fell over 2011-12 to 2023-24. (Source: MoSPI HCES Fact Sheet 2023-24)
In villages it fell from 52.90% to 47.04%. In cities it fell from 42.62% to 39.68%.
Look at the last year too. From 2022-23 to 2023-24 the share rose a little. Rural went from 46.38% to 47.04%. Urban went from 39.17% to 39.68%. (Source: MoSPI HCES press note)
Check 1
The food share of household spending rose in villages between 2011-12 and 2023-24.
Where did the money move?
Cereals lost the most ground. Beverages and processed food gained. The table uses the cereals-only figures from the fact sheet.
| Item (share of spending) | Rural 2011-12 | Rural 2023-24 | Urban 2011-12 | Urban 2023-24 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cereals | 10.69% | 4.97% | 6.61% | 3.74% |
| Beverages, processed food etc. | 7.90% | 9.84% | 8.98% | 11.09% |
| Milk and products | 8.04% | 8.44% | 7.01% | 7.19% |
| Egg, fish and meat | 4.79% | 4.92% | 3.65% | 3.56% |
Beverages, processed food and similar items are now the largest food item. (Source: MoSPI HCES Fact Sheet 2023-24) (Source: MoSPI HCES press note)
Does a falling cereal share mean people eat less grain?
Not necessarily. This is a share of spending. It is not a count of kilos.
Think of a student whose pocket money grows. Her bus fare stays the same. Its share of her money drops. Yet she travels as much as before.
For how prices feed into such surveys, read Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Think it through: Rural families spend a larger share on food than urban ones. What might that say about income in the two places?
How Much Do Indians Actually Eat?
What did the July 2025 report find?
On 2 July 2025 MoSPI released Nutritional Intake in India. It used HCES data for 2022-23 and 2023-24. (Source: PIB, 2 Jul 2025)
In 2023-24 a rural person ate 2,212 kcal a day. That came with 61.8 g protein and 60.4 g fat. An urban person ate 2,240 kcal, 63.4 g protein and 69.8 g fat. (Source: PIB, 2 Jul 2025)
The year before, calories were 2,233 rural and 2,250 urban. So they dipped a little.
Check 2
Average daily calories in 2023-24 were slightly lower than in 2022-23.
What stands out in the urban numbers?
Urban fat intake, 69.8 g, was higher than rural, 60.4 g. Protein was close, at 63.4 g against 61.8 g. (Source: PIB, 2 Jul 2025)
Fat is one signal of a shifting diet. It fits the story of city life and richer food.
Why Does India Face a Double Burden?
What does NFHS-6 say about weight?
The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) ran in 2023-24. IIPS published its fact sheets in May 2026. (Source: NFHS-6 fact sheet)
Among those aged 15-49, 30.7% of women are overweight or obese. For men it is 27.3%. The earlier round had 24.0% and 22.9%. (Source: NFHS-6 fact sheet)
Is the problem equal in villages and cities?
No. Among women, 42.8% in cities are overweight or obese. In villages it is 25.5%. (Source: NFHS-6 fact sheet)
This matches the spending story. Cities see more packaged food and less physical work.
Check 3
Overweight and obesity among women is about the same in villages and cities.
What about anaemia?
Anaemia means too little haemoglobin in the blood. It leaves people tired and weak.
The latest numbers are from NFHS-5. They show 57.0% of women aged 15-49 and 67.1% of children aged 6-59 months with anaemia. (Source: Tribune)
NFHS-6 fact sheets carry no anaemia indicators. The ministry cited concerns about capillary sampling, meaning blood taken from a finger prick. (Source: Business Standard)
So do not quote an NFHS-6 anaemia figure. There is none in the fact sheets. For the national programme, read Anaemia Mukt Bharat Strategy.
Check 4
The NFHS-6 fact sheets report new anaemia figures for women and children.
Think it through: A country can have anaemic children and overweight adults at once. Why is that hard for one policy to fix?
How Fast Is Ultra-Processed Food Growing?
What does the WHO-ICRIER report say?
Ultra-processed foods (UPF) are factory-made foods with many added ingredients. Think packaged chips, sweet drinks and instant snacks.
Retail sales value of UPF grew at a compound rate of 13.37% a year from 2011 to 2021. (Source: WHO-ICRIER, Aug 2023)
The source is the WHO-ICRIER report of August 2023. It is not ATNI. Exams may test this. (Source: WHO-ICRIER, Aug 2023)
Check 5
The 13.37% annual growth of ultra-processed food sales comes from the WHO-ICRIER report.
What Does a Healthy Plate Look Like?
What is My Plate?
The ICMR-NIN Dietary Guidelines for Indians came out in May 2024. (Source: The Print) The body behind them is ICMR, with its National Institute of Nutrition.
Its My Plate shows a day’s food for a 2,000 kcal diet.
| Food group | Daily amount (2,000 kcal) |
|---|---|
| Vegetables | 400 g |
| Fruit | 100 g |
| Cereals | About 250 g |
| Pulses, eggs or flesh foods | 85 g |
| Nuts | 35 g |
| Fats | 27 g |
Notice the plate is vegetable-heavy and not cereal-heavy. (Source: ICMR-NIN My Plate brief) (Source: The Print)
Check 6
On the My Plate for 2,000 kcal, vegetables (400 g) outweigh cereals (about 250 g).
What Is Being Done About It?
What is the front-of-pack label case?
Front-of-pack labelling (FOPL) puts a warning on the front of packaged food. FSSAI proposed a 365-day voluntary timeline.
On 28 September 2026 the Supreme Court questioned that timeline. It asked why a whole year was needed. Then it reserved its order. It did not reject the timeline. (Source: LiveLaw) (Source: Moneylife)
No final ruling had been found by 1 November 2026. Reserved means the judges will announce the decision later.
What are CBSE sugar boards?
CBSE circular Acad-26/2025 of 14 May 2025 told schools to set up Sugar Boards. They help track how much sugar students take in. (Source: Careers360)
How do PM-POSHAN and millets fit in?
PM-POSHAN began in September 2021 and renamed the mid-day meal. It gives a hot cooked meal in Balvatika and Classes I-VIII of government and aided schools, from 2021-22 to 2025-26. (Source: Rajya Sabha reply, Aug 2023)
The UN declared 2023 the International Year of Millets, on India’s proposal. The Centre asked states to add millets to PM-POSHAN.
For the millet push, read Nutri-Cereals Mission.
Think it through: A school meal reaches children every day. Why might it be a good place to change eating habits early?
Exam Traps
Use the cereals-only figures (10.69 to 4.97 rural). Do not mix them with the “cereals and substitutes” series.
The 13.37% UPF growth is WHO-ICRIER, not ATNI.
On FOPL, the Supreme Court only questioned FSSAI and reserved judgment.
NFHS-6 fact sheets give no anaemia numbers. Use NFHS-5 for 57.0% and 67.1%.
