- Within that belt, Coimbatore built a separate, older engineering base. Pioneered in the 1920s-30s by inventor-industrialist G.D. Naidu, it earned Coimbatore the nickname “Pump City.” The city now supplies roughly 40% of India’s pumps and motors.
- The Gurgaon-Delhi-Meerut region, part of the National Capital Region, grew around automobiles and IT services.
