1967 — The Six-Day War
- Jun 1967 Israel captures the Golan Heights from Syria in the closing days of the Six-Day War.
1973-1974 — War and Disengagement
- Oct 1973 Syria attempts to retake the Golan in the Yom Kippur War. Israeli forces push the advance back.
- 31 May 1974 Israel and Syria sign the Agreement on Disengagement, creating a UN-monitored buffer zone. UNDOF begins monitoring it soon after.
1981-2019 — Annexation and Recognition
- 14 Dec 1981 The Israeli Knesset passes the Golan Heights Law, extending Israeli law over the territory.
- 1981 The UN Security Council unanimously adopts Resolution 497, declaring the annexation “null and void.”
- 2019 The United States becomes the first country to recognise Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
