Chile was the first South American country to sign a trade agreement with India, back in 1956. Seven decades on, the two countries are racing to conclude a much bigger deal. It is built around a resource India badly needs: lithium.

4 2016: PTA Expanded Tenfold

5 2026: Negotiating a Full CEPA

6 From PTA to CEPA: Why the Upgrade Matters
- The Difference A PTA only cuts tariffs on a fixed, negotiated list of goods. A CEPA is much broader, covering goods, services, and investment together, closer to a genuine free trade agreement.
