- Dates Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605–1689) was a French traveller and gem merchant.
- Six Voyages He made six voyages to India between 1630 and 1668, during the reigns of Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb.
- Global Trade His travels also took him through Safavid Iran, as part of early modern global trade networks.

Golconda and Kollur, Described in Detail
- The Answer Tavernier is particularly noted for his detailed account of diamonds and diamond mines in India.
- First of Its Kind His book gave the first detailed European technical description of the Golconda and Kollur diamond mines.
- The Book He published Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier in 1676, recording diamond prices, mining techniques, and famous stones.
- Famous Stones He described the Great Mogul diamond and, in 1666, acquired a 115-carat rough diamond later cut into the French Blue Diamond.
