India in August 1947 was not one country. It was British India plus 565 separate princely states, each free to join India, join Pakistan, or stay independent. Within fifteen months, Vallabhbhai Patel had persuaded, and where necessary forced, all but a handful into the Indian Union.

By 15 August 1947, 562 of 565 princely states had acceded to India, largely through Patel’s own persuasion. The last holdouts, Junagadh, Hyderabad, and Kashmir, needed force as well as diplomacy.

- 31 October 1875: Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel is born at Nadiad, Gujarat. He later trains as a barrister in England, and builds a highly successful legal practice in Ahmedabad.
- 1918: He leads the Kheda Satyagraha, his first major public campaign alongside Gandhi, against a disputed land revenue demand.
- 1928: He leads the Bardoli Satyagraha, a similar tax-resistance campaign. Bardoli’s women give him the title “Sardar,” meaning chief or leader.
- 1931: He is elected Congress President, for its Karachi session, where the “Fundamental Rights and Economic Policy” resolution is passed.
- 1942-45: He is imprisoned at Ahmednagar Fort, alongside the entire Congress Working Committee, during the Quit India Movement.
- 15 August 1947: He becomes independent India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. He immediately begins work integrating the princely states.
- September 1948: He orders military action to integrate Hyderabad, the largest of the holdout princely states.
- 15 December 1950: He dies in Bombay, aged 75, still serving as Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister.

- Fact He was elected President of the Ahmedabad Municipality three times: in 1922, 1924, and 1927. He modernised the city’s infrastructure, and led major flood-relief efforts after the 1927 floods.
3. Repeated imprisonment
- Fact He was imprisoned multiple times during the independence struggle. This included alongside Gandhi at Yeravda Jail (1932-34), and at Ahmednagar Fort during Quit India (1942-45).
4. Shaping the Constitution
- Fact He helped shape India’s Constitution, chairing several key Constituent Assembly committees. He is remembered as the architect of India’s All India Services, often linked to the phrase “Steel Frame” for that service, though no confirmed record shows him coining it himself.
5. The cooperative behind Amul
- Fact He guided the creation of the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union, the cooperative that later became the Amul brand.
6. Banning the RSS
- Fact As Home Minister, he banned the RSS on 4 February 1948, following Gandhi’s assassination.
7. The last to speak with Gandhi
- Fact He was the last person to speak with Gandhi privately, just minutes before Gandhi’s assassination on 30 January 1948.
8. Rebuilding Somnath Temple
- Fact After independence, he ordered the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple, having visited the ruined site during Diwali 1947.

1. Junagadh’s plebiscite
- Fact At Junagadh, its Muslim Nawab acceded to Pakistan despite an 80% Hindu population. Patel sent troops to occupy the state. A later plebiscite recorded a 99.5% vote in favour of joining India instead.
2. Hyderabad’s Razakar resistance
- Fact At Hyderabad, the largest princely state, the Nizam’s Razakar militia resisted accession despite an 80% Hindu population there too. Military action became necessary, and the Nizam signed his instrument of accession only after it.
3. Kashmir: Patel deferred to Nehru
- Fact On Kashmir specifically, Patel initially favoured swift military action, but deferred to Nehru and Mountbatten’s insistence on first securing a signed Instrument of Accession. His own aide, V.P. Menon, carried that instrument back from the Maharaja.
4. A rare setback, over Pakistan’s dues
- Fact He personally opposed releasing 55 crore rupees owed to Pakistan during the Kashmir conflict. Gandhi’s fast-unto-death led the Cabinet to reverse that decision, a rare and painful setback for Patel.
5. Clashes with Nehru
- Analysis He and Nehru occasionally clashed, especially over Hyderabad and Kashmir policy. Both leaders still stayed publicly committed to a joint leadership, even while privately disagreeing.
6. The Statue of Unity
- Fact The Statue of Unity, inaugurated on 31 October 2018, stands 182 metres tall, at Kevadia, Gujarat. It is the tallest statue in the world, more than twice the height of the Statue of Liberty.

- Fact His birthday, 31 October, is observed nationally as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day).
