Fact Puducherry’s capital is Puducherry town, formerly called Pondicherry.
Link Puducherry comprises four regions: Puducherry and Karaikal, near Tamil Nadu; Mahe, an enclave inside Kerala; and Yanam, an enclave inside Andhra Pradesh.
Fact France transferred its Indian possessions to India on 1 November 1954. Full legal integration followed in 1963, giving Puducherry its Union Territory status.
Fact As of 2026, the Chief Minister is N. Rangasamy of the All India NR Congress (AINRC). He was sworn in for a record fifth term on 13 May 2026, after his AINRC-led alliance won the 2026 Assembly election.
Fact The Lieutenant Governor is Kuniyil Kailashnathan, the 25th LG of Puducherry, in office since 7 August 2024.

3. Auroville, and a Layered Identity

Fact Puducherry’s French colonial history left it a distinct legal and cultural identity, still visible in French-language schools and street signage.
Fact Auroville, an experimental international township, was founded in 1968 just outside Puducherry town. It draws residents from more than fifty countries, built around the idea of a city belonging to no single nation.
