Patterns and Tensions
- Prasad’s path — Constituent Assembly president, then Republic’s first President — reflects a broader pattern. Several early Indian leaders moved directly from constitution-making roles into the offices the Constitution itself created.
- His two full terms happened before any formal limit existed on presidential re-election. No later President has repeated it, though nothing in law prevents it.
- His continued closeness to Gandhi and the Congress leadership, even after taking on a constitutionally non-partisan office, foreshadowed a tension that would recur for later Presidents too — balancing personal political history against the office’s expected neutrality.
