In 1924, physics journals rejected a paper by a young lecturer in Dhaka, calling it a mistake. He sent it directly to Albert Einstein instead. Einstein translated it himself, added his own supporting paper, and got it published. An entire class of particles, bosons, is now named after that lecturer.

- Satyendra Nath Bose was born on 1 January 1894, in Calcutta. He graduated from the University of Calcutta. He then taught at the University of Dacca from 1921 to 1945, and later at Calcutta from 1945 to 1956.
- In 1924, Bose wrote a paper deriving Planck’s quantum radiation law using a new statistical method, without relying on classical physics.
- Physics journals initially rejected the paper. Bose sent it directly to Albert Einstein instead. Einstein agreed with the result, translated it into German himself, and submitted it to a journal along with his own supporting paper. Both were published in 1924.
- This work laid the foundation for Bose-Einstein statistics. The class of particles it describes, bosons, is named in his honour.
- Bose never held a formal doctorate. He was later awarded numerous honorary doctorates by leading universities.

- Bose-Einstein statistics later predicted a new state of matter, the Bose-Einstein condensate. This state was finally created experimentally in 1995, decades after the original theory.
- The Government of India honoured Bose with the Padma Vibhushan, its second-highest civilian award, in 1954.
- In 1959, Bose was named National Professor, India’s highest honour for a scholar. He held this position for 15 years.
- Bose died on 4 February 1974.
