- Its founders were Arcot Ramasamy Mudaliar and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar. It grew out of the Board of Scientific and Industrial Research, set up in 1940.

- CSIR was almost never created. In 1934, the colonial government rejected the idea outright, calling a dedicated research department unnecessary. World War II changed that calculation within a few years.
- The Prime Minister holds CSIR’s presidency, and CSIR’s own Director General also heads the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. That places the body unusually close to the top of India’s science policy machinery, not at arm’s length from it.

The CSIR-ASPIRE scheme, launched on International Women’s Day in 2023, has funded 301 women researchers as independent Principal Investigators. - 13 July 2026: The scheme’s funded projects have so far produced over 253 SCI-indexed publications, more than 15 patent filings, and trained over 300 research fellows. - 30 June 2026: At CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT), Hyderabad, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated 4 Advanced R&D facilities and laid the foundation stone for a ₹44.46 crore, 200-student hostel.
- The new facilities: an Advanced R&D Facility for Fluorochemicals, a Continuous Processing Platform for Industrial Chemicals, a Sustainable Engineering Complex (SustEC), and a 500 KLD Decentralized Effluent Treatment Plant for the Siripuram Handloom Cluster.
- The Minister cited CSIR technologies converting agricultural waste into compressed biogas, and captured CO2 into Dimethyl Ether, as examples of research-to-industry translation strengthening India’s clean-energy and circular-economy goals.
