Bioenablers, and How Projects Get Approved
  • BioenablersBioE3 works through three types of “Bioenablers”: Biomanufacturing Hubs, Biofoundries, and Bio-AI Hubs.
  • Bio-AI Priority SectorsFive priority sectors are earmarked for Bio-AI Hubs: Ayurveda, agriculture innovation, genome diagnostics, synthetic biology, and biomolecular design.
  • Selection ProcessSelection runs through a multi-tier process. A Screening Committee checks eligibility, a Selection Committee evaluates technical merit, and a Financial Evaluation Committee reviews funding structure.
  • Final ApprovalAn Apex Committee gives final approval. It reviews each project’s defined milestones, deliverables, and total cost.
  • Funding SplitThe government funds up to 70% of an approved project’s cost. The private sector must contribute the remaining 30%.

🌟 Great to Know
Industrial-Scale Biology, Beyond the Big Hubs
  • Wider PushBioE3 fits into India’s wider “Circular Bioeconomy” push. It also supports the government’s Net Zero and Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) goals.
  • Industrial ScaleThe policy targets biology at industrial scale, not just lab research. Its stated goal is manufacturing “from medicine to materials.”
  • A Newer AngleBio-AI Hubs blend biotechnology with artificial intelligence. This is a distinctly newer angle than India’s older biotechnology missions.
  • DecentralisationBy spreading Biomanufacturing Hubs through Tier-II and Tier-III cities, the policy also aims to decentralise India’s biotech industry, beyond established hubs like Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
