What an Accelerometer Does
  • Measures Acceleration An accelerometer is a sensor that measures acceleration — the rate of change of velocity — including sudden changes from impact, free fall, and tilt relative to gravity.
  • Car Airbags In a car, an accelerometer-based crash sensor detects sudden deceleration from a collision, triggering the airbag control unit to deploy airbags almost instantaneously.
  • Laptop Hard Drive Protection Many laptops use an accelerometer to detect accidental free fall, immediately turning off (parking) the hard drive to prevent the read/write heads from crashing into the platter on impact.
  • Smartphone Screen Rotation Smartphones use an accelerometer to detect the direction of gravity relative to the device, rotating the display between portrait and landscape mode when tilted.
