How Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer Actually Works
  • Swapping the Nucleus SCNT takes the nucleus from an ordinary body cell. That nucleus is inserted into an egg cell whose own nucleus has been removed.
  • The Egg Does the Rest The egg cell then behaves as if fertilised. It develops into an embryo genetically identical to the donor of the body cell.
  • First Demonstrated in 1996 Dolly the sheep, born in 1996, was the first mammal successfully cloned this way from an adult cell.
