  • PrinsepJames Prinsep deciphered the Brahmi script in 1837, then used it to crack Kharosthi the next year.
  • KharosthiKharosthi was written right to left, unlike most other ancient Indian scripts.
Numismatics

Good to Know

Reading Inscriptions

Ashoka’s Edicts
  • CountAshoka’s edicts survive in about 33 inscriptions, in four groups: Major and Minor Rock Edicts, and Major and Minor Pillar Edicts.
  • LanguageMost use the Prakrit language in Brahmi script; the northwest used Kharosthi, and a few frontier edicts even used Greek and Aramaic.
The Prayag Prashasti
  • ContentThe Prayag Prashasti, or Allahabad Pillar Inscription, is a Sanskrit eulogy for Emperor Samudragupta.
  • AuthorHis court poet Harisena composed it in the 4th century CE, carved onto an older pillar that already carried Ashoka’s edicts.

Dating and Cross-Checking

Carbon-14 Dating
  • MethodArchaeologists use Carbon-14 dating to estimate the age of organic remains like charcoal, wood or bone.
  • RangeIt works reliably for material up to roughly 50,000 years old.
Coins and the Indo-Greeks
  • DiscoveryCoin evidence revealed over 30 Indo-Greek kings, far more than texts alone.
  • TextsGreek and Roman texts name only a handful of these rulers.
A Fuller Picture
  • MethodCombining archaeology, epigraphy and numismatics gives historians a fuller, cross-verified picture than any single source type alone.
