Building AI models takes powerful computer chips, called GPUs. Renting them commercially is expensive. India’s answer is to buy a large shared pool of GPUs and rent them back to Indian startups and researchers at a fraction of the market price. That’s the core idea behind the IndiaAI Mission.
Must Know
What the IndiaAI Mission is
- ApprovalThe Union Cabinet approved the IndiaAI Mission in March 2024.
- OutlayIts outlay is Rs 10,371.92 crore, spread over five years.
- MinistryThe Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) runs it.
- Why it mattersBecause it makes AI compute, data and talent affordable for Indian builders.
The problem it solves
- GPUsBuilding AI models needs powerful chips called GPUs.
- CostRenting GPUs commercially is expensive for startups.
- AnswerIndia buys a large shared pool of GPUs and rents them cheaply.
- So whatSo Indian builders can train models without paying global cloud prices.
Good to Know
The seven pillars
- ComputeIndiaAI Compute provides subsidised GPU access.
- ModelsFoundation Models funds home-grown AI language models.
- DataAIKosh is the datasets platform for Indian builders.
- OthersApplication development, FutureSkills, startup financing and safe AI complete the list.
- Why it mattersBecause each pillar tackles one barrier to building AI in India.
AIKosh and sovereign models
- AIKoshAIKosh hosts over 367 datasets across 22 scheduled languages.
- DataIt pools farmer and health records for AI development.
- ModelsTwenty sovereign AI model proposals are being supported.
- ScaleThese include 12 large and 8 small language models.
- Why it mattersBecause Indian models trained on Indian data work better for Indian contexts.
Compute at scale
- GPUsOver 38,000 GPUs have been onboarded on the compute portal.
- TargetThe goal is 100,000 public GPUs by December 2026.
- PriceSubsidised rates bring effective cost below Rs 100 an hour.
- WhoStartups, researchers and academic institutions can use it.
- Why it mattersBecause cheap compute is what lets small teams build big models.

Great to Know
Why sovereign AI matters
- FramingSovereign AI means India builds its own foundational models.
- LanguagesHome-grown models serve Indian languages and contexts better.
- ControlIt reduces reliance on foreign large language models.
- FrontierIt sits alongside the semiconductor and quantum missions.
- Why it mattersBecause control over core AI tech is now a strategic goal.
- So whatSo India is investing in the tools of the next tech era at home.
Privacy trade-offs
- DataAIKosh pools real government data on farmers, health and transactions.
- RiskPooling such data raises genuine privacy and anonymisation questions.
- RulesThe DPDP Act, 2023 and India AI Governance Guidelines cover personal data.
- BalanceThe value of the data must be weighed against how it is protected.
- Why it mattersBecause building AI on public data must not erode public trust.
