El Niño isn’t the only ocean pattern watching India’s monsoon. A quieter one, closer to home, can cancel out El Niño’s effect entirely.

Why it matters
A strong positive IOD can offset El Niño’s usual monsoon-weakening effect — it happened in 1983, 1994, and 1997. First identified in 1999 by Saji and Yamagata, published in Nature.

- The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is a difference in sea surface temperature between the western and eastern tropical Indian Ocean.
- It has two phases: positive and negative.
- In a positive IOD, the western Indian Ocean (near Africa) warms up, while the eastern Indian Ocean (near Indonesia) cools down.
