Why so crowded
Flat land, deep fertile soil, and year-round river water make this the easiest large stretch of land in India to farm — which is exactly why it also became the most densely populated.

- The Indo-Gangetic Plain is a vast lowland built by the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra river systems.
- It lies between the Himalaya in the north and the Peninsular Plateau in the south.
- The plain spans roughly 700,000 square kilometres across India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
- Within India, it covers Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam.
- The plain formed entirely from alluvium — silt, sand, and clay carried down and deposited by these rivers.

- Geographers split the plain into four belts, based on the age and texture of the alluvium.
- Bhabar is a narrow, porous, gravel-and-pebble strip running along the Shiwalik foothills. Rivers vanish underground here.
- Tarai lies just south of Bhabar. The underground rivers re-emerge here, feeding marshy, densely vegetated land.
- Bhangar is the older, higher alluvium, set back from the rivers’ active floodplains. It contains calcium-carbonate nodules called kankar.
- Khadar is the younger, lower alluvium on the active floodplain. It floods almost every year, laying down fresh, fertile silt.
