Cabinet approves ₹10,000 crore Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme
Key facts
- On 28 October 2026, the Union Cabinet approved a ₹10,000 crore Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme.
- The scheme runs from FY2027-28 to FY2039-40. It has a 3-year setup period followed by 10 years of production support.
- It targets raising domestic container manufacturing capacity from about 70,000 TEU to 7.5 lakh TEU.
Why it matters
[Policy] India ships huge volumes of goods in containers, yet most containers are imported or leased from abroad. Shortages and freight spikes then hit exporters. This scheme builds domestic capacity, with money paid for production over ten years. A tenfold capacity target is large. Exam hooks are TEU as a unit of container capacity, port-led logistics and the Atmanirbhar Bharat push for manufacturing.
