1. Define mantle plume
A mantle plume is a rising column of abnormally hot rock. It originates deep in the mantle, possibly at the core-mantle boundary.
2. How it forms
Heat builds up at the base of the mantle and rises buoyantly, like a lava-lamp blob. It stays narrow as it ascends through cooler surrounding mantle.
3. The plume head and tail
A plume typically has a large, mushroom-shaped ‘head’ followed by a thinner ‘tail’. The head causes the most dramatic surface effects when it arrives.
4. Distinct from plate-boundary volcanism
Ordinary volcanism occurs at plate boundaries, driven by plate motion itself. A mantle plume instead rises from within the mantle, independent of plate edges.
5. Hotspot volcanism
Where a plume reaches the surface, it melts crust and produces a ‘hotspot’ of volcanic activity. Hawaii is the textbook example of active hotspot volcanism.
6. Hotspot tracks reveal plate motion
A plume stays roughly fixed while the plate above it moves. This creates a chain of progressively older volcanoes, like the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain.
7. Continental flood basalts
A large plume head arriving under a continent can erupt enormous lava volumes in a short geological time. The Deccan Traps in India are a major example.
8. Link to continental break-up
Plume-driven flood basalts can weaken and rift continental crust. Some geologists link large plume events to the break-up of supercontinents like Pangaea.
9. Mass extinction connection
Massive plume eruptions release large volumes of gas, altering climate rapidly. The Deccan Traps eruption is linked by many scientists to the end-Cretaceous extinction.
10. Evidence from seismic tomography
Seismic tomography (mapping how seismic waves travel through the Earth) has imaged plume-like structures deep in the mantle. This supports the plume model, though details remain debated.
11. Role in plate tectonics theory
Mantle plumes explain intraplate volcanism that plate-boundary theory alone cannot. They add a mantle-convection dimension to plate tectonics beyond simple plate-edge interactions.
