What happened under Akbar?

Accounts say the craft reached its height under Emperor Akbar. Royal patronage was the main source of work.

What happened later?

3

How was it made?

The cloth is stretched tight on a wooden frame. The frame is called the adda. The designer first traces the pattern on the cloth.

What is the aari?

The aari is a hooked needle fixed to a wooden stick. It looks a little like a crochet hook. It lets the worker pass thread above and below the cloth quickly.

Why does this matter?

The aari speeds up the stitching. It also gives neat, even loops. So the craft is also called aari work.

What is the memory hook?

Adda frame, aari hook.

True or False: The aari is a hooked needle on a wooden stick.

What are the materials?

Early Zardozi used pure gold and silver wire. This work was called kalabattu. It was done on silk, satin and velvet.

What is used today?

Today the wire is plated. It may be gold-plated, silver-plated or copper-plated. Rising metal prices made pure wire costly.

What else is added?

Workers add dabka (twisted wire), kora, katori, tikena and sitara (sequins).

What is the memory hook?

Pure wire then; plated wire now.

True or False: Early Zardozi used plated copper wire.
