  • Acids and Bases Acids and bases appear throughout daily life. Examples include the citric acid in lemons and the sodium bicarbonate used in antacids.
  • Fermentation Fermentation is a chemical process driven by microorganisms. It produces foods and drinks including yogurt, bread, and various fermented beverages.
  • Fuel Composition Common fuels, including petrol, diesel, and CNG, differ in their chemical composition. This affects their combustion efficiency and emissions.
Coal and Petroleum: Formation and Products
  • Coal Formation Coal formed over roughly 300 million years, as buried forests were compressed and heated underground. This slow conversion into a carbon-rich rock is called carbonisation.
  • Coal’s By-Products Processing coal yields coke (nearly pure carbon, used in steelmaking), coal tar (a source of dyes, drugs, and naphthalene balls), and coal gas, once used to light London’s streets from 1810.
  • Petroleum Formation Petroleum formed from marine organisms buried under sand and clay, transformed by heat and pressure over millions of years. Since oil and gas are lighter than water, they settle in a layer above any trapped water underground.

Combustion: Ignition, Flames, and Fire Control
  • Combustion Combustion is a chemical reaction where a substance combines with oxygen and releases heat, sometimes as light too. A substance that undergoes it is called a fuel.
  • Ignition Temperature Every combustible substance has an ignition temperature, the lowest temperature at which it catches fire. Below this, it simply will not burn, however flammable it seems.
  • Inflammable Substances Petrol, alcohol, and LPG have very low ignition temperatures, so they catch fire easily and are called inflammable substances.
  • Three Requirements for Fire Fire needs fuel, air for oxygen, and heat to reach ignition temperature. Removing any one of the three puts the fire out.
  • Why CO2 Extinguishes Fire Carbon dioxide is heavier than oxygen, so it blankets a fire and cuts off its air supply. It also cools the fuel as it expands, making it ideal for electrical and oil fires where water would spread the flames or conduct current.
  • Three Zones of a Flame A candle flame has three zones: an innermost dark zone of unburnt vapour, a luminous yellow middle zone of partial combustion, and the hottest outer blue zone of complete combustion.
  • Calorific Value Calorific value is the heat released by burning 1 kg of a fuel completely, measured in kilojoules per kg (kJ/kg). It is the standard way to compare how much energy different fuels actually deliver.

  • Lead in Lipstick FDA testing has found trace lead in nearly every lipstick shade it has sampled. FDA guidance now caps lead at 10 ppm in lip products.
  • BVO in Soft Drinks Some citrus-flavoured sodas used brominated vegetable oil (BVO) to keep flavouring evenly mixed. FDA banned BVO from food in 2024, citing thyroid-safety concerns.
  • MSG in Chinese Fast Food Monosodium glutamate is commonly found in Chinese fast food, and it carries a long-standing public controversy. But FDA classifies MSG as safe, in the same category as salt, and never confirmed a scientific link to “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome” symptoms.
Common Salt’s Chemical Family
  • Baking Soda Baking soda is sodium hydrogencarbonate (NaHCO3). It releases carbon dioxide when heated or mixed with an acid, which is what makes cakes and bread rise.
  • Washing Soda Washing soda is sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), used to soften hard water and help soap lather better.
  • Bleaching Powder Bleaching powder is calcium oxychloride, made by passing chlorine gas over slaked lime. It is used for bleaching cloth and disinfecting drinking water.
  • Plaster of Paris Plaster of Paris is a form of calcium sulphate that hardens quickly when mixed with water, which is why it is used to set fractured bones and make moulds.
  • Water of Crystallisation Water of crystallisation is a fixed number of water molecules chemically bound inside a crystal, like the five in copper sulphate crystals (CuSO4.5H2O). Heating drives this water off.
  • Olfactory Indicators Substances like onion, vanilla, and clove oil change smell in acidic or basic conditions, working as indicators you can identify by scent rather than colour.
