- He founded the Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO) in 1945, later renamed Tata Motors, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in 1968.

- He received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1992.
- He died on 29 November 1993, in Geneva, Switzerland, at age 89.

- The Indian government nationalised Air India in 1953, under Jawaharlal Nehru. JRD Tata was retained as chairman, a position he then held until 1978.

- He stepped down as Tata Group chairman in 1991, handing over to his nephew, Ratan Tata.
- He is widely remembered as the “father of Indian civil aviation,” for both his personal flying career and for founding India’s first airline.
