- Segregation at SourceThe rules require every waste generator, households included, to sort their waste into separate wet, dry and hazardous streams before it’s even collected.
- Bulk Generator ResponsibilityLarge waste generators, like big housing complexes, hotels and offices, must arrange their own on-site waste processing, such as composting. They cannot rely entirely on the municipal system.
- Restrictions on BurningThe rules ban open burning of waste, and specifically restrict setting up new waste-processing facilities near rivers, ponds, wetlands, coastal zones or forest land.

How Waste Actually Gets Disposed Of
- LandfillingThis is the simplest and most common method: burying waste in a designated area. It’s cheap to run, but it takes up huge amounts of land. Once a landfill is full, it’s genuinely difficult to reclaim that land for anything else.
- CompostingThis converts wet organic waste, like food scraps, into usable fertiliser through controlled decomposition. It works only on already-segregated wet waste, which is exactly why source segregation matters so much.
- Incineration and Waste-to-EnergyBurning waste at high temperature reduces its volume dramatically, and in a waste-to-energy plant, that heat generates electricity. It needs specific waste types to burn cleanly and efficiently, and can raise real air-quality concerns if run poorly.

- Why Landfills Produce Gas at AllOrganic waste buried deep in a landfill decomposes without oxygen, since it’s sealed under layers of other trash. This oxygen-free decomposition produces methane gas as a byproduct.

A Real Landfill Story: Ghazipur’s 2017 Collapse
- A Landfill Built to Close in 2002Delhi’s Ghazipur landfill opened in 1984. City planners meant to stop dumping there once it hit a set height, around 2002. The dumping never actually stopped.
- Two Killed When It CollapsedBy 2017 the pile had grown far past its planned limit. On 1 September 2017, part of it slid into a nearby canal. The resulting wave swept vehicles off a nearby road, killing two people.
