India-Romania Relations: Nearly 80 Years On

India’s President had not set foot in Romania for nearly thirty years. In July 2026, that changed. This page explains the long gap, the old diplomatic dates and what the visit achieved.

1Why did a presidential visit take nearly 30 years?

Imagine a friendship where the head of state had not visited in almost three decades. That was India and Romania until July 2026.

The gap did not mean the ties were dead. Embassies, trade and cultural exchange went on all along.

Romania was the final stop of a three-nation tour. She went to Moldova, then North Macedonia, then Romania.

2How old is the diplomatic relationship?

India and Romania set up diplomatic relations on 14 December 1948. At first it was a legation, a lower level than an embassy.

On 15 November 1957, ties were upgraded to full embassy level.

Do not merge the two dates. They are nearly nine years apart.

3What did the 2026 visit achieve?

Both sides agreed to work towards doubling trade over the next three years. Trade was about $1.45 billion in 2024-25.

The Bucharest University of Economic Studies gave her an Honorary Doctorate. On 25 July, she spoke to the Indian community and “Friends of India”.
