India-Moldova Relations

No Indian President had ever visited Moldova. That changed in July 2026, when Droupadi Murmu landed in Chisinau with about thirty businesspeople. This page tells why that visit mattered and how the relationship was woken up.

Think of four questions as you read. Why was the visit historic? Was the relationship active before 2026? What do the two countries trade? And what did the business forum cover?

1992. Diplomatic relations
2024. Consultations resume
2025. Apple market opens
2026. Murmu visits Moldova

Chisinau: The capital of Moldova.

State Visit: A formal visit by a head of state, at a host’s invitation.

Consultations: Regular official talks between two governments.

Head of state: The country’s top constitutional figure.

1Why was Murmu’s visit to Moldova historic?

Moldova is a small country in Eastern Europe. It became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991. In all that time no Indian President had visited it.

That changed on 20 July 2026. President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Chisinau at the invitation of President Maia Sandu. It was the first visit by an Indian head of state since ties began. (Source: Tribuna)

She held talks with Sandu and met the Parliament’s President, Igor Grosu. She also met the Moldova-India Parliamentary Friendship Group and members of the Indian community. (Source: Moldpres)

Moldova was the first stop of a State Visit that also covered North Macedonia and Romania. The tour ran from 19 to 25 July 2026. (Source: AP7AM)

Think it through: Why send a President and not a minister?

A President is India’s head of state. Sending her on a first-ever visit shows that India wants to visibly raise a relationship.

  • First by an Indian President.

3What do the two countries trade?

5What are the exam traps?
