What OPCW Is
- Status OPCW is an autonomous, independent organization. It implements the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), and is not part of the EU, NATO, or WHO.
- HQ Its headquarters is in The Hague, Netherlands. The CWC entered into force on 29 April 1997.
What OPCW Actually Does
- Monitor It monitors the chemical industry, to prevent new chemical weapons from emerging.
- Protect It provides assistance and protection to member states against chemical weapons threats. It also verifies the destruction of declared chemical-weapons stockpiles.

Membership and India’s Role
- Members OPCW has 193 member states. Any state that joins the CWC automatically becomes an OPCW member too.
- India India is an original signatory to the CWC, and has been an active OPCW member since 1997.
The 2013 Nobel Peace Prize
- Nobel OPCW won the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize, for its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons.
- Syria At the time, its inspectors were on a UN-backed mission verifying and destroying Syria’s chemical arsenal, during Syria’s civil war.
