Five real member states
- The Organization of Turkic States has five members: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkiye, and Uzbekistan.
A frequent exam trap

When it was founded
- The organisation was founded on 3 October 2009, in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan, through the Nakhchivan Agreement.
Uzbekistan joined later
- Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkiye were founding members in 2009. Uzbekistan joined later, as a full member, at the 2019 Baku summit.

- Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev first proposed the organisation in 2006. It took three more years to actually formalise it.
Its core purpose
- The organisation exists to foster comprehensive cooperation among Turkic-speaking states, spanning economic, cultural, and political ties.
Observer states
- Hungary became an observer in 2018, Turkmenistan in 2021, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in 2022.
A partner organisation joined too
- The Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) itself was granted observer status in 2023, linking two separate regional groupings.
