Singapore was once run from Kolkata, not from its own soil. Two centuries later, it is India’s largest source of foreign investment.

How did India and Singapore become close partners?
How did the link begin?
The modern link goes back to Sir Stamford Raffles. In 1819 he set up a trading station at Singapore.
The station sat on the route through the Strait of Malacca. It was set up for the English East India Company.
1819: Raffles landed in January and bought land for the company.
1826: Singapore, Penang and Malacca were joined as the Straits Settlements, a far-off district of India.
1830: the Settlements became a district under Bengal.
1851: they came under the direct rule of the governor-general of India.
1867: they became a crown colony under the Colonial Office in London. The transfer took effect on 1 April 1867.
So Singapore was governed from Kolkata until 1867. The link to India was long.
English is still the main language of government, trade and school in Singapore. Tamil is one of its four official languages.

When did Singapore become independent?
Singapore became independent in 1965. India was among the first countries to recognise it.
That early step built trust. It still shapes how both sides speak about the relationship.

What is the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership?
PM Modi visited Singapore in September 2024. During that visit, ties rose to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
PM Lawrence Wong visited India from 2 to 4 September 2025.
The two leaders adopted a CSP Roadmap. It covers eight priority areas, such as economic cooperation, skills, digitalisation, connectivity and defence.

What do trade, investment and defence look like?
What did CECA change for trade?
CECA is the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement between the two countries.
Bilateral trade grew after CECA was concluded. It rose from USD 6.7 billion in FY2004-05 to USD 36.1 billion in 2025-26.
Singapore is India’s sixth-largest trade partner. It is India’s largest trade partner in ASEAN.

How big is Singapore’s investment in India?
In FY2025-26, Singapore was the largest source of FDI into India. The flow was USD 19.8 billion.
Cumulative FDI from Singapore stood at USD 194.68 billion from April 2000 to March 2026. That is about one-fourth of all FDI inflows.
More than 440 Singapore companies are registered in India.

Singapore is a regional finance hub. Many global firms route investment through it. A trade pact, shared English-language law and strong business ties make that route easy.
How do the armed forces work together?
There are exercises for all three services.
The Army has Exercise Agni Warrior. The Navy has Exercise SIMBEX. The Air Force has Joint Military Training.
The 32nd edition of SIMBEX was held in Singapore in July-August 2025.
The 4th Joint Military Exercise, Bold Kurukshetra, took place in India in August 2025.

What links the two on payments?
On 21 February 2023, India’s UPI was linked to Singapore’s PayNow.
Singapore is the first nation with which India began cross-border person-to-person payments.
RuPay cards can also be accepted in Singapore.

How large is the Indian community in Singapore?
Per Singapore’s 2020 census, people of Indian origin are 9% of its 4.04 million residents.
Tamil is one of Singapore’s four official languages.
Indians came early. About 120 sepoys of the Bengal Native Infantry arrived with Raffles in 1819.
In the 1800s, India sent convicts to Singapore. This eased crowded Indian jails. The convicts worked on public buildings and roads.
Tamil labourers on contract came too. Traders and workers settled near the Serangoon River. That area is now Little India.
Little India became a conservation area on 7 July 1989.
Singapore has the highest concentration of IIT and IIM alumni in any one city outside India.

What is the Ministerial Roundtable?
The India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) is a high-level forum. Its first meeting was on 17 September 2022 in New Delhi.
On 20 August 2026, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal took part in the 4th ISMR and the 4th Business Roundtable in Singapore.
An MoU signing followed. Talks covered agri-exports, fintech and sustainable infrastructure.

Do not say Singapore was governed from London. The MEA brief says Kolkata, till 1867.
Do not mix the 2024 elevation with the 2025 roadmap. The roadmap came later, in September 2025.
Do not confuse SIMBEX (navy) with Agni Warrior (army).
