Great to Know
- “Longest-serving Prime Minister” can mean two different things, a common exam trap. One measure is total days in office across all terms, however broken up. The other is continuous, unbroken days in office.
- By the second measure, continuous and elected, Modi’s tenure since 2014 is what set the 2026 record covered below.
- Gujarat’s chief ministership and the Prime Minister’s office are both accountable to their respective legislatures. A CM answers to the state Legislative Assembly, and a PM to the Lok Sabha, under India’s parliamentary system.
Current Affairs
- On 10 June 2026, Modi became India’s longest continuously-serving elected Prime Minister, completing 4,399 consecutive days in office.
- He surpassed Jawaharlal Nehru’s record of 4,398 consecutive days as an elected PM, a mark Nehru set between 1952 and 1964.
- Modi’s tenure has run unbroken since he first took the oath of office on 26 May 2014, through re-elections in 2019 and 2024.
- The record is specifically about elected, continuous service. Indira Gandhi served roughly 14 years as PM in total, but not continuously, so she doesn’t hold this particular record.
- The Union Cabinet passed a resolution marking the milestone.
