How many tiers and ranks does the Indian Army have?
The Army has three tiers. They are Commissioned Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and Other Ranks. Together they hold 16 working ranks.
How are the 16 ranks split?
Other Ranks have 4 ranks. JCOs have 3. Commissioned Officers have 9. Field Marshal sits above all of them as an honorary rank.
How can you read a rank from the badge?
Badges get simpler as rank falls. Other Ranks wear chevron stripes. JCOs wear stars with a coloured band. Officers wear stars. From Major upward, the national emblem is added.

What is the difference between a rank and an appointment?
A rank is an officer’s permanent position in the hierarchy. An appointment is the job given to an officer of that rank. Learners mix these up often.
Is “Chief of the Army Staff” a rank?
No. General is the rank. Chief of the Army Staff, or COAS, is the appointment. The government appoints one officer to the post.
What happens when the Chief retires?
The General leaves the appointment. A successor takes it. The job was never the same thing as the rank.

Who has held the rank of Field Marshal?
Field Marshal is an honorary five-star rank. It is not a working rank. It carries no fixed command, so no years-of-service figure applies.
Who received it?
Only two officers have held it. Sam Manekshaw received it in 1973 for leading the 1971 war. K. M. Cariappa received it in 1986. Cariappa had been independent India’s first Commander-in-Chief of the Army.
Why is the exact date of Cariappa’s honour skipped here?
Sources give two different dates for it. The year 1986 is firm. This lesson uses only the year.
Is it the highest working rank?
No. General is the highest working rank. Field Marshal is a rare honour above it.

What are the nine commissioned officer ranks?
The ranks run from Lieutenant at the bottom to General at the top. Each rank leads a larger group of soldiers.
What does each rank usually lead?
- Lieutenant and Captain: junior officers who serve with platoons and companies.
- Major: a company of about three platoons.
- Lieutenant Colonel: a senior officer of the unit.
- Colonel: a battalion of about four companies.
- Brigadier: a brigade.
- Major General: a division.
- Lieutenant General: a corps, or a senior post at Army Headquarters.
- General: the whole Army, as COAS.
A platoon has about 30 to 35 soldiers. A JCO such as a Subedar commands it.
How do the badges differ?
Lieutenant has two stars. Captain has three stars. Major has the national emblem alone. Lieutenant Colonel has the emblem above one star. Colonel has the emblem above two stars. Brigadier has the emblem above three stars in a triangle.
The three General ranks use swords and batons. A Major General has a star above a crossed sword and baton. A Lieutenant General has the emblem above a crossed sword and baton. A General has the emblem above a star above the crossed sword and baton.

Who are the JCOs and the Other Ranks?
Junior Commissioned Officers bridge soldiers and officers. They come up from the ranks. They need no officer commission.
What are the three JCO ranks?
- Naib Subedar: the entry JCO rank.
- Subedar: the middle JCO rank.
- Subedar Major: the senior-most JCO.
The Subedar Major is often the Commanding Officer’s main adviser on the unit’s soldiers.
What are the four Other Ranks?
- Sepoy: the base rank, with no badge.
- Lance Naik: one chevron.
- Naik: two chevrons.
- Havildar: three chevrons.
Some arms use other names for the base rank. Examples are Rifleman, Gunner and Signalman.
How does promotion work?
Promotion changes as rank rises. Junior ranks move on a fixed clock. Senior ranks depend on boards and vacancies.
What is time-scale promotion?
The officer is promoted after set years of service. For Short Service Commission officers, the Ministry of Defence gives these points of reckonable service.
- Captain: after 2 years.
- Major: after 6 years.
- Lieutenant Colonel: after 13 years.
What changes above Lieutenant Colonel?
Colonel and Brigadier are selection ranks. A board judges merit and record. Major General and above depend on a vacancy at that level.
Why this design?
Junior officers get a clear path. The senior posts stay scarce and competitive.

How do Army ranks match Navy and Air Force ranks?
Each Army rank has a Navy and an Air Force match. Names often look alike, but the ranks differ.

Which pairs trip people up?
Major General matches Rear Admiral, not Vice Admiral. Colonel matches the Navy’s Captain, not Commander. The Army’s Captain is a different, lower rank.
What about the top rank?
Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh is the only officer to hold that rank in the Air Force.
Which exam questions tested this?
UPSC CSP 2024, Q69 tested four Army, Air Force and Navy matches. Only Major, Squadron Leader and Lieutenant Commander was correct. Brigadier pairs with Commodore, not Commander. Major General pairs with Rear Admiral, not Vice Admiral. Lieutenant Colonel pairs with Wing Commander, not Group Captain.
CAPF (ACs) 2020, Q38 asked which Army rank matches Wing Commander. The answer is Lieutenant Colonel. It also matches Commander in the Navy.

Questions to think through
Why is the Army’s Captain not the same as the Navy’s Captain?
The names overlap, but the ranks do not. The Army Captain is a junior officer. A company is commanded by a Major. The Navy Captain is a senior officer who matches an Army Colonel.
Why is Field Marshal given so rarely?
It is an honour, not a step in a career. It has gone to two officers in over 75 years. That keeps it a rare mark of national gratitude.
Why do junior ranks move by years and senior ranks by vacancy?
A fixed clock gives young officers a clear path. At the top, only so many posts exist. A vacancy rule keeps those posts competitive.
Why does the JCO tier matter?
It gives long-serving soldiers a leadership path. They need no officer commission. It also gives the unit an experienced link between officers and soldiers.
