- 2025 India produced 150.18 million tonnes of rice. That overtook China’s 145.28 million tonnes, making India the world’s largest producer.
- Growing Conditions Rice needs warm weather, between 25°C and 35°C. It also needs 100–150 cm of rainfall, or equivalent irrigation.
- Top State West Bengal is India’s top rice-producing state. Uttar Pradesh follows close behind.

- Export Share Rice accounted for about 24% of India’s record ₹450,840 crore in agricultural exports in 2024–25. It was India’s single largest export item.
- Green Revolution High-yielding varieties (HYVs) developed during the Green Revolution sharply boosted rice output from the 1960s onward. Irrigated northern states gained the most.
- New Seed Varieties India’s Agriculture Minister linked the 2025 milestone to 184 new high-yielding, climate-resilient seed varieties. ICAR released these across 25 crops.
