Must Know

  • The Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) was established in 2009. It is based at the NCR Biotech Science Cluster in Faridabad, Haryana.
  • THSTI was envisioned by M.K. Bhan, then Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT). Its goal was to speed up the move from lab research to real-world healthcare products.
  • Since November 2023, THSTI has been an institute of the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC). BRIC itself sits under DBT, Ministry of Science and Technology.
  • THSTI runs six intramural centres. Three of these are the Vaccine & Infectious Disease Research Centre (VIDRC), the Centre for Bio-design & Diagnostics (CBD), and the Drug Discovery Research Centre (DDRC).

  • 15 July 2026: THSTI celebrated its 17th Foundation Day. Dr. Rajesh Gokhale, DBT Secretary and BRIC’s Director General, praised the institute’s 17-year record of high-impact scientific output.
  • At the same event, Prof. Roger Foo of the National University of Singapore delivered the Foundation Day lecture. He argued for shifting from reactive disease treatment toward proactive, population-wide prevention, using deep metabolic screening to catch hidden risk factors early.
  • Also on 15 July 2026, THSTI hosted SYNCHN 2026, its third annual industry meet, at the NCR Biotech Science Cluster. Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of Biocon gave the virtual keynote address as Chief Guest.
  • SYNCHN has grown fast. Its 2024 debut produced 13 Letters of Intent. Its 2025 edition reached 19 binding strategic agreements between THSTI and industry partners.
  • SYNCHN 2026 also featured outside updates. CDSCO spoke on a new biologics regulatory framework, and NITI Aayog on scaling affordable healthcare solutions. IVCA reported that India’s bioeconomy is growing about 18% year-on-year.
