- Kailasavadivu Sivan was born on 14 April 1957, in Sarakkalvilai, Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu. He was the first graduate in his family.
- He earned a B.Tech in Aeronautical Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology in 1980, and a Master’s in Aerospace Engineering from IISc Bangalore in 1982.
- Sivan joined ISRO in 1982, working on the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) project. He earned a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Bombay in 2006.
- He was appointed Director of ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre in July 2014, and Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in June 2015.
- Sivan became the 9th Chairman of ISRO, taking office on 15 January 2018. He also served as Secretary, Department of Space, and Chairman of the Space Commission.
- Under his chairmanship, ISRO launched Chandrayaan-2 on 22 July 2019. The Vikram lander and Pragyan rover lost contact during descent, though the orbiter continued functioning.
- His term was extended by a year in December 2020, and he served as ISRO Chairman until 14 January 2022, when S. Somanath succeeded him.
