Why this difference matters for sea level
- Melting floating sea ice doesn’t raise sea level, since it already displaces its own weight in water. Melting land-based ice adds entirely new water to the ocean, and does raise sea level.

Sea ice trends have diverged
- Arctic sea ice extent has declined sharply and fairly consistently for decades. Antarctic sea ice extent stayed more variable, even growing slightly in some years, before a sharp decline beginning around 2016.
Ice shelves as a buttress
- Antarctica’s floating ice shelves don’t directly raise sea level when they melt or calve. But losing a shelf removes a buttress holding back the land ice behind it, which then flows into the ocean faster.
