Delhi-NCR gets AATAL, an air-pollution lab that identifies real-time sources and toxic content
Key facts
- Union Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated the Integrated Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosol Toxicity Analysis Laboratory (AATAL) on 24 October 2026.
- The Minister described it as the world's first integrated facility of its kind. It sits at IITM's Delhi branch.
- It was set up under Mission Mausam. It identifies what pollutants are made of and where they come from.
- It is linked to IITM's AIRWISE system, which gives 72-hour air-quality forecasts at 400-metre resolution.
Why it matters
[First] Delhi's air policy has long relied on AQI numbers alone. AATAL adds the chemical make-up of PM2.5 and its likely health effects. It also splits pollution by source, such as vehicles, crop burning and dust. This helps agencies like CAQM target actions better. For exams, link it with Mission Mausam, source apportionment and the Commission for Air Quality Management.
