Draft BS-VII norms add brake, tyre and real-world emission limits
Key facts
- The Road Transport Ministry published draft Bharat Stage VII notifications in October 2026.
- Passenger cars would come under the norms from 1 April 2029.
- Light commercial vehicles follow in April 2030, and buses and heavy trucks in April 2031.
- The draft sets brake-particle and tyre-abrasion limits, and adds on-road testing with portable equipment.
- The public has 30 days to comment, so the rules may still change.
Why it matters
[Policy] BS-VI (April 2020) only covered exhaust. BS-VII would also cover non-exhaust pollution from brakes and tyres. This matters because electric cars still shed brake and tyre dust. It helps in GS-3 answers on urban air pollution and vehicle regulation.
